So for a brief time, there were three submarines at Ras Hilal ( Santarosa, Narvalo and Atropo). Finally about Atropo, you also missed her stop at Ras Hilal at 0730/10 July (after diverted from Derna). The destination was again changed and she eventually unloaded her stores at Tobruk.ĥ. She did not unload there but was ordered to Mersa Matruh and left the same evening. Another submarine you missed is Narvalo: she had been ordered to bring supplies to Derna and arrived there on the evening of 10 July but before unloading she was ordered to go to Ras Hilal where she arrived at 0110/11 July but could only dock at 0615. The reasons of this stop are not clear and not stated in her report but perhaps she had a few stores to unload there.Ĥ. For Santarosa, she had unloaded at Tobruk and then went to Ras Hilal where she arrived at 0921/10 July as you wrote. She was ordered to land these at Ras Hilal and so she returned to Ras Hilal on 10 July and unloaded the 205 cans.ģ. She did this on 9 July with the exception of about 205 cans of petrol. You missed the submarine Enrico Toti which arrived at Ras Hilal at 0545/6 July, disembarked part her stores but then was ordered to re-embark them and land them at Tobruk. The defects of Sciesa (partly repaired with the help of Bragadino) meant that she was forced to delay her departure and this had the fortunate consequence of the surprise visit of the Duce the next day.Ģ. Technically Sciesa was the first to arrive at Ras Hilal but she had a defective air compressor and Bragadino unloaded her supplies first. Un altro sommergibile che attraccò a Ras El Hilal, alle ore 09.20 del 10 luglio, fu il SANTAROSA, che però il giorno prima aveva sbarcato il carico (51 tonnellate di munizioni) a Derna, da dove riprese il mare per Taranto alle ore 19.00 dell'11. Sono questi due, BRAGADINO e SCIESA, i sommergibili nella fotografia. Sempre il 3 luglio, alle 04.15, arrivò a Ras El Hilal il sommergibile SCIESA, partito anch'esso da Taranto il 29 giugno, trasportando un carico di 64 tonnellate di benzina on latte e 4 di viveri. Trasportava 48 tonnellate di benzina in latte e 1,2 di viveri. Il primo sommergibile ad attraccare a Ras El Hilal, alle 05.50 del 3 luglio 1942, fu il BRAGADINO, che partito da Taranto ll 27 giugno diretto a Derna, causa condizioni atmosferiche sfavorevoli fu dirottato per quella località della Cirenaica, dopo aver passato una notte sul fondo dinnanzi a Derna. Ma nessun sommergibile di quelli impiegati in quelle missioni andò perduto in quella zona.
L'ancoraggio di Rae el Hilal fu fornito di un pontile nella primavera del 1942 (dopo l'affondamento dell'HMS URGE) e ad esso attraccarono saltuariamente i sommergibili da trasporto italiani con carichi di rifornimenti urgenti per il fronte della Cirenaica, il cui porto principale di sbarco resto però quello di Derna, e successivamente, dopo la riconquista, Tobruk.
